If you are using silicon carbide, all you need is 600 grit. It wears fast and becomes the finer grit you need for a pre-polish. Unfortunately, these have limited uses. You may need to keep two 600 belts. Use one for shaping and another, well-used one for pre-polishing. The quality of your pre-polish, the final fine sanding, can’t be overstated.

Most do-it-yourselfers still refer to various grades of "sandpaper," but the proper term for these sanding sheets is "coated abrasives." There are four factors to consider when selecting any coated abrasive: the abrasive mineral, or which type of rough material; the grade, or the coarseness or fineness of the mineral; the backing (paper or cloth); and the coating, or the nature and extent of

A sandpaper''s grit refers to the size of the abrasive materials on the paper. There are various standards that exist for ascertaining sandpaper grit size, but common standards include the Coated Abrasive Manufacturers Institute (CAMI) and the Federation of European Producers of Abrasives (FEPA).Regardless of which standard you use to measure, a general rule is that the lower the nuer …
Because silicon carbide is harder and sharper, it is used for appliions involving glass and other nonmetal materials. Aluminum oxide, which is the tougher abrasive, is used for metalworking appliions where high forces are common.
Our Sharpening Stone Grit Chart After discussing the topic of grit coarseness and fineness we decided to come up with our own chart. Since one person''s "fine" and one manufacturers "fine" may mean something completely different we established a 1 to 10 grit chart with 1 being the most coarse and 10 being the most fine.
The best way to determine what grit to use is to test-sand. Keep in mind that rough grits of sandpaper leave deep scratches so start with the finer grits (150 to 220) and slowly work up to the rougher grades. Raising the grain is what painters must contend with after the first coat of paint is applied.

The grit size (a.k.a. the mesh nuer) comes from the nuer of standardized holes that fit within the standard dimensional sized screen, i.e., 200 holes equals 200 grit. As a result, as the nuer of holes increase in the stipulated dimensional sized screen, the smaller the holes are and the smaller the size of the particles that fall through the holes in the screen.
